Candle & Wax Melt Safety Guide
At Scentarama, your safety matters just as much as how good your home smells. This guide covers everything you need to know to enjoy our candles, soy wax melts, and warmers safely — plus a few tips to get the best scent throw and burn life out of every product.
Candle Safety
Before you light
- Trim the wick to 5mm (¼ inch) before every burn. A long wick causes larger flames, soot, and uneven melting.
- Remove all packaging, stickers, and any packing materials from the top of the candle.
- Place your candle on a flat, heat-resistant, stable surface — never on a windowsill, near curtains, or under a shelf.
While burning
- Never leave a burning candle unattended, even for a few minutes.
- Keep candles away from drafts, fans, air vents, and open windows — drafts cause uneven burning and can push the flame toward the edge of the jar.
- Keep well out of reach of children and pets.
- Burn for no more than 3–4 hours at a time. This protects the container from overheating and gives the wax time to reset.
- On the first burn, let the candle burn long enough for the wax to melt evenly across the top (usually 1–2 hours) — this prevents "tunnelling," where wax burns straight down the middle and leaves wasted wax around the edges.
- Stop burning when there is about 1cm (½ inch) of wax left in the bottom. Burning a candle down to nothing can crack the jar or overheat the surface underneath.
Extinguishing and storage
- Use a wick dipper or snuffer rather than blowing out the candle — this reduces smoke and prevents hot wax splatter.
- Never touch or move a candle while the wax is still liquid.
- Store candles away from direct sunlight and heat, which can cause fading, warping, or a change in scent.
Wax Melt & Warmer Safety
Choosing a warmer
- Electric wax warmers (including plug-in/pluggable warmers) are the safest option — they warm the wax gently and evenly without an open flame.
- If using a tealight warmer, always use a good-quality tealight and never leave it burning unattended.
Using your warmer
- Never leave a wax warmer switched on and unattended, or running overnight.
- Place the warmer on a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains, paper, or anything flammable.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets — the dish and melted wax both get very hot.
- Don't overfill the wax dish. One cube or clamshell segment per melt is usually enough for a strong scent throw.
- Allow the warmer to cool completely before adding a new wax melt, cleaning it, or moving it.
- For electric/pluggable warmers, check the cord and plug regularly and unplug when not in use.
Cleaning between scents
- Let old wax fully harden, then pop it out of the dish before adding a new melt — this keeps scents from mixing and extends the life of your warmer.
- If the hardened wax is stuck and won't lift out, switch the warmer back on for a minute or two — just enough to soften the outer edge of the wax — then switch off and gently slide it out. You don't need to fully re-melt it, just loosen the edges.
- Wipe the dish with a paper towel while slightly warm for easy clean-up; avoid using water on a hot dish.
General Tips for Best Results
- Store all candles and wax melts in a cool, dark place — heat and direct sun will soften wax and shorten shelf life.
- If you have pets, particularly birds, use caution with any heavily fragranced products and always ensure good ventilation in the room.
- Discontinue use if you notice any unusual smell, smoke, or if a container becomes cracked or damaged.
- Always keep a working smoke alarm nearby when burning candles or using a warmer.
- If a scent seems to fade the longer you're in the room, that's usually "nose blindness" (olfactory fatigue) rather than the candle or wax melt losing strength — your brain naturally stops registering a smell it's been exposed to continuously. Step outside for a few minutes and the scent will be just as strong when you come back in. Swapping between two or three scents throughout the week can also help keep your nose "reset."
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I run a wax melt warmer for?
Most electric warmers are safe to run for several hours at a time, but they should never be left unattended or running while you're asleep or out of the house.
Can I mix different wax melt scents together?
Yes — mixing complementary scents (a practice sometimes called "scent layering") is a great way to create a custom fragrance. Just make sure the dish is clean of old wax first for the truest scent.
Why has my candle stopped throwing scent?
This is often caused by tunnelling on the first burn, or the wick being too short. Trim the wick and try a longer first burn to create a full, even wax pool.
Is it safe to leave a wax melt warmer on overnight?
No — as with any heat source, warmers should be switched off before you go to sleep or leave the house.
Why can't I smell my candle or wax melt after a while, even though guests say it's strong?
This is nose blindness (olfactory fatigue), not a weak scent. Your brain filters out smells you're constantly exposed to, so you stop noticing a fragrance that's still filling the room. Step outside for a few minutes to "reset" your sense of smell, or rotate between a couple of different scents.
