Wax Melts FAQ

General questions about our handmade wax melts.

What are wax melts and how do I use them?

Wax melts are small pieces of scented wax with no wick, designed to be gently heated in a wax warmer rather than burned. Pop a piece into the dish of your warmer, turn it on or light the tealight underneath, and the wax melts to release fragrance into the room — no flame touching the wax at all.

What's the difference between wax melts and candles?

A candle has its own wick and burns down as you use it. A wax melt has no wick — it relies on an external heat source to release scent, so you can swap scents whenever you like rather than being locked into one for the life of the wax.

Do I need a special warmer for wax melts?

Yes — wax melts need a warmer (electric or tealight-powered) to release their scent, since they don't have a wick of their own. We stock both electric warmers and pluggable warmers if you don't have one yet.

How long does the scent from a wax melt last?

Most of our wax melts give strong fragrance for 6–8 hours of warming time, though this varies by scent strength and room size. Once a melt starts to fade, it's time to pop in a fresh one.

Can I reuse a wax melt once the scent has faded?

Once the fragrance has faded, the wax won't throw much scent even with more heat. Let it cool, pop the spent wax out of the dish, and start with a fresh piece.

How do I clean my wax warmer between scents?

Let the warmer cool completely, then either pour off the spent liquid wax or gently pop it out once hardened. Avoid running water over a hot dish, as sudden temperature changes can crack it. A silicone flip dish liner makes clean-up even easier.

Can I mix different wax melt scents together?

Absolutely — mixing and layering scents is one of the fun parts of wax melts. Try pairing a fruity melt with something warm and musky, or two florals from the same family.

Are wax melts safe around pets and kids?

Wax melts remove the open-flame risk of a candle, but the warmer and melted wax do get hot, so warmers should be kept out of reach of kids and pets, on a stable surface, and never left running unattended.

How should I store my wax melts, and do they expire?

Keep wax melts in their packaging in a cool, dark spot out of direct sunlight. Stored well, they keep their fragrance a long time — but for the strongest scent throw, use within 6–12 months of purchase.

Why isn't my wax melt throwing much scent?

Common causes: a large or well-ventilated room, a warmer not hot enough to fully liquefy the wax, or a piece that has already given most of its scent. Try a larger piece, close the door, or check your warmer globe is working.

Candle FAQ

Everything about our handmade soy candles.

What are Scentarama candles made from?

Our candles are hand-poured in Perth, Western Australia using soy wax, which burns cleaner and cooler than paraffin. They come in a range of jars and tins — from our small 100g amber jars through to large statement jars, travel tins and gift-set sizes.

How long do your candles burn for?

Burn time depends on the size — our small 100g candles and travel tins give shorter burn times suited to smaller spaces or gifting, while our 300g jars and large candles burn for many hours across multiple sessions.

How do I get the best (and safest) burn from my candle?

On the first burn, let the candle burn long enough for the wax to melt evenly across the whole top of the jar (usually 1–2 hours) — this prevents "tunnelling" on later burns. Keep wicks trimmed to about 5mm before each light, avoid burning for more than 3–4 hours at a time, and always burn on a heat-safe, flat surface away from drafts.

Do I need to trim the wick, and how often?

Yes — trim the wick to around 5mm before every burn. A long or curled wick causes a bigger flame, soot, and uneven burning.

Why is my candle tunnelling, and how do I fix it?

Tunnelling happens when the wax doesn't melt evenly across the full surface on early burns. Try burning it for a longer session so the melt pool can catch up to the edges of the jar — it usually evens out after a burn or two.

Are your candles safe for pets and kids?

As with any open flame, never leave a burning candle unattended and always keep it well out of reach of children and pets, on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

What sizes do your candles come in?

We offer a range, including 100g small amber jars, 300g jars, larger statement jars like our Infinity and French Monaco ranges, travel tins, and mini candles perfect for gifting. Check each candle's product page for exact size and burn time.

Can I reuse the jar once the candle is finished?

Definitely! Once all the wax is gone, remove any remaining wick bits, wash the jar with warm soapy water, and it's ready to reuse as a storage pot, planter, or catch-all.

Reed Diffuser FAQ

Set-and-forget fragrance — here's how to get the most from yours.

How do reed diffusers work?

Reed diffusers use natural capillary action — the reeds soak up scented oil from the bottle and release fragrance as it evaporates. There's no flame or power needed, making them great for bedrooms, bathrooms, or anywhere you'd rather not use heat.

How long does a reed diffuser last?

Generally 6–8 weeks of continuous fragrance, depending on the room's temperature, airflow and how many reeds you're using.

How often should I flip the reeds?

Flipping the reeds every 1–2 weeks refreshes the scent throw, since the exposed end can dry out over time. Give them a flip whenever the scent starts to fade.

Where's the best place to put a diffuser?

Choose a spot with some airflow but out of direct sunlight and away from air vents or heaters — entryways, hallways, bathrooms and bedside tables all work well.

Can I add more reeds for a stronger scent?

Yes — adding a few extra reeds increases the surface area releasing fragrance for a stronger throw, though the oil will be used up faster.

Why has my diffuser's scent faded quickly?

Usually down to warmth or airflow using up the oil faster, or reeds needing a flip. Try relocating somewhere cooler and stiller, and flip the reeds.

Are reed diffusers safe around pets and kids?

Diffusers don't use a flame, but the oil isn't meant to be ingested. Keep diffusers up and out of reach of small children and curious pets.

Can I refill my diffuser bottle?

We don't currently sell refill oil separately, so once a diffuser is finished the best option is a new one in your favourite scent.

Room Spray FAQ

Fresh home fragrance in seconds.

How do I use a Scentarama room spray?

Shake the bottle, hold it upright about 30cm from the area, and mist 2–4 sprays into the room, over soft furnishings, or into the air.

How long does the scent from a room spray last?

Expect a burst of fragrance lasting 20 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the room and airflow; spraying onto fabric tends to hold scent a little longer.

Can I spray it on fabric, linen or bedding?

Many customers use room sprays on soft furnishings, but we recommend testing on a hidden spot first, particularly with delicate or light-coloured fabrics.

Can room sprays stain fabric or furniture?

It's unlikely with normal use, but no fragrance product is completely risk-free on every fabric. Patch test delicate materials first and avoid spraying directly onto polished timber or painted surfaces.

Are room sprays safe around pets?

Room sprays are meant for the air and fabric, not directly on pets. If your pet has known sensitivities, spray in a well-ventilated area rather than directly around them.

Wax Warmer FAQ

Electric and pluggable warmers for your wax melts.

What's the difference between an electric and a pluggable warmer?

An electric warmer sits on a benchtop and uses a globe or heating plate, usually with adjustable settings. A pluggable warmer plugs directly into a wall socket, making it compact for smaller spaces.

What globe or bulb does my warmer need?

This varies by model — check your warmer's product page or the base of the unit for the correct wattage. We stock replacement globes and accessories, so reach out if you're not sure which one fits.

How do I clean my warmer between scents?

Let it cool fully, then remove hardened wax or wipe the dish with paper towel while slightly warm. Never run cold water over a hot dish. A silicone flip dish liner makes swapping scents almost instant.

Is it safe to leave a warmer on overnight or unattended?

No — warmers should always be switched off when you leave the room or go to sleep, and kept on a stable surface away from kids, pets and flammable items.

Do electric warmers come with a warranty?

Yes — our electric wax melt warmers come with a limited 1-year warranty from the date of purchase, covering manufacturing defects and electrical faults (normal wear and tear, misuse or accidental damage aren't covered). See our refund and warranty policy for full details, or email info@scentarama.com.au with your proof of purchase to make a claim.

Can I use my wax warmer with essential oils instead of wax melts?

Our warmers are designed and tested for use with wax melts. For oil-based products, check the specific manufacturer guidance for that warmer model first.
